Purpose

The Monrovia Police Officers' Association will award one scholarship each year to a student with an intellectual or developmental disability who plans to continue his/her education in a university, community college, or trade/vocational school, with the sole or main intent of gaining the knowledge and/or training necessary to improve life-skills, gain employment, and become more self-sufficient.

For purposes of this scholarship application, the Monrovia Police Officers' Association adopts the definition used by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, which is that an intellectual or developmental disability is “a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills.”

Amount

The award is currently set at $1,000.00, to be awarded in a lump-sum prior to the student’s first term of attendance at his/her chosen institution.

Selection Process

Applicants will submit a form which is available for download on this page. Once all applications are received, a selection committee made up of five members of the Monrovia Police Officers' Association will meet to review the applications and select the award winner.
